Research buildings demand control.

Precision, containment, hygiene, security, repetition — these are not limitations. They are the conditions that allow scientific work to happen.

But the question for this R&D Centre was different:

Can a building protect the discipline of research while creating a more open, humane and mentally clear environment for discovery?

The project is conceived as a living field — a campus where laboratories, landscape, movement and daylight operate as one working ecology.

Research clusters are held within precise technical bands, but they are not left as isolated islands. They are connected through shaded courts, collaborative atriums, planted buffers and shared spaces that allow disciplines to meet without compromising the rigour of the lab.

The atrium becomes the project’s spatial engine.

Less lobby, more climate-responsive commons.

It gives the building orientation, pause, visibility and informal exchange. Around it, the architecture moves between control and release: research bands, then gardens; technical zones, then bridges; enclosed workspaces, then filtered light and long internal views.

The environmental strategy is embedded into the building’s anatomy.

A planted perimeter works as a microclimate buffer.

Layered façades temper heat gain while maintaining visual openness.

Daylight is filtered rather than flooded, allowing the building to remain open without sacrificing comfort, concentration or long-duration cognitive work.

In section, the project reveals its real argument.

Research, circulation, landscape and social exchange are not stacked as separate functions. They are interlocked.

Movement becomes a generator of encounter.

Landscape becomes infrastructure.

Light becomes a working material.

This R&D Centre proposes a research campus that is precise without being closed, efficient without becoming repetitive, and technical without becoming emotionally exhausting.

It is not a container for research. It is an organism for discovery.
